Farmhouse To Your Kitchen, The Evolution Of The Farm Sink
Farm sinks date as far back as the nineteenth century, and added to the warmth and charm of country kitchens back then. Today, they have made a resurgence in popularity, because of their beautiful looks and exemplary versatility. A farmers sink can be found to fit just about any type of kitchen, from contemporary to traditional. Styles can be found that will go with nearly any kind of counter top as well.
Kitchen sinks years ago were used to wash not only every pot and pan in one’s home, they were also used to clean vegetables, as well as to bathe children, grandchildren, and even family pets. In general these sinks became a classic and prominent gathering place in any country kitchen. Bringing back this nostalgia seems to be the reason for the upsurge in popularity of farm style sinks. They are both beautiful and versatile and add a warmth and aesthetic attractiveness to any kitchen, whether one has a modern kitchen, or an older more eclectic country style kitchen. Cottage style kitchens especially benefit from the addition of a gorgeous, classic farm style sink, and the look seems to transport one back to a simpler, unhurried, and more nostalgic time.
Farmers sinks are also known as apron sinks, and feature a high back, with a low front, which stands out about an inch or so from the counter top edge. Some of them also feature beautiful decorative tiles, which add another dimension, and additional texture to the surrounding cabinets. The basins in them are deep, and they are available with just one large basin, two basins which can either be the same depth, or one basin can be slightly deeper than the second one.
Farmer sinks come in a wide variety of colors and styles, and can be made from many types of materials. These sinks can be found in aluminum, cast iron, granite, lime stone, soap stone, porcelain, or a material called fireclay. Fireclay has a density that is similar to china. One great feature of most of these materials is that they won’t rust. A rusty looking kitchen sink eventually takes away from the beauty of the kitchen’s appearance. Blending beauty with functionality, they are also highly resistant to scratches, chips and stains, and are bacteria resistant as well. These sinks are so versatile, they will withstand all of the use that any family could possibly give to them, and continue to remain beautiful for years.
One thing to cautiously consider is the weight of a sink, especially an original. Some of them can be extremely heavy, and it is best to be sure that the surrounding counter top will be able to hold the weight of the sink before it is purchased. A newer, lighter one may be an option, or the consideration of making the sink a free standing sink, outside of the counter top is always another option.
Today, these sinks, or replicas of them, can be found in home fixture stores. But if an original farmers sink is desired, some creativity may be necessary to find one. Checking thrift stores, salvage stores, estate sales, and even classified ad type listings can be helpful. Finding one of these treasures is a challenging undertaking, but one that proves to be very worthwhile.
Whether remodeling an existing kitchen, or creating a brand new functional and beautiful space, a farm sink is a very desirable option when a comfortable and classic look is wished for. To update a kitchen with a chic new look, sometimes it is best to look to the past for creatively inspirational ideas.
